The Hellenic Military Geographical Service (HMGS) was founded in 1889 and is the oldest cartographic organization in the country. As part of its dual mission, it produces and distributes modern and reliable Geographical Materials (GS) to the Armed Forces (ED), while providing upgraded geographical services to the citizens of the country, contributing to its development.
HMGS has been a pioneer in adopting GIS technology in Greece since 1984. Today, it applies ArcGIS technology, to the following areas:
- Collection, management and analysis of digital geographic and geospatial data, from various sources
- Creating a series of maps of various scales (1: 500,000, 1: 250,000, 1: 50,000).
- Creating basemaps services, and spatial analysis tools.
- Development and operation of a web application for soil analysis, digital interactive maps (PC, Tablet and mobile), as well as a geo-index for locating and ordering Geographical Materials through a web portal (http://web.gys.gr/GeoSearch/GYS/ ).
